Emergence 2002
We worked with residents of the Lilac Lodge community in Columbia City to create Emergence, a set of digital murals. Over a period of several months we met with residents, many of whom are marginalized in the community, and collected images and text representing their stories.
We analyzed this material to identify patterns that represent the cultural DNA that is Lilac Lodge. Images representing these patterns were integrated with images of the interior and exterior landscapes.
When we began the project tenants often had to be coaxed into this meeting room. When it was finished the room became a welcoming area where residents gather. Many of them proudly touch the surface of the mural at the location of their contribution making a physical connection that mirrors cultural integration.
