A Voice Like Yours: Words and Images from a Shared Sojourn
International Residency

At
Centrum, Art Partners brought together artists from Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Washington State.

For a week these artists lived together sharing viewpoints on politics, economics, urban and rural lifestyles, the balance of home, family and artistic pursuits, gender bias and marginalization, and the role of the artist, male or female, in affecting societal change.

To gain a better understanding of the things that united them as women and artists, and what was unique to each culture, we provided standard accordion journals and disposable cameras and asked the artists to consider the reasons they became artists and the social, economic, political, religious and cultural factors that inform the work they make.

We asked them to reflect on any assumptions they made about each other prior to sharing time together, and to describe the ways those perceptions had been challenged or confirmed by the end of the residency. Nearly all of the journals incorporated drawing and text, and sometimes very poignant accounts of isolation, faith and redemption through art.

As a collection, they represent a wide set of perspectives, while providing clear evidence that travel and cultural exchange stimulate ideas and action, and that women around the world are often the catalysts of social and cultural exchange.
