2002-Cultural
Exchange and Nanjing Residency
The China Workers’ Center for International Exchange invited Art Partners to bring a delegation of Washington artists to China beginning a relationship between Chinese and American artists. Organized by World Trade and Exchanges, Catherine and Barbara visited Beijing, Xian, Wuhan, Nanjing, and Shanghai with Seattle area artists. American artists gave workshops and lectures, and met with faculty and students at several universities.
We visited Wuhan, Nanjung and Xian because we wanted to meet with Chinese artists Zhang Guanghui, Chen Qi and Jin Baoping to discuss an exchange with Washington printmakers.
Following the fifteen-day exchange, Barbara and Catherine stayed in Nanjing for a ten-day residency at the Nanjing Arts Institute. From our base at the visiting faculty housing we explored Nanjing. At the institute’s Shangmei College we learned Chinese water-based woodblock printmaking and gave a workshop on glass plate monotype.
